NAEP Results 2011

For this activity, we were to write another paper in APA format because many members of the class had issues the last time. I got full credit on my paper last time, so this was just a review for me. We had to go to the NCES website and download a spreadsheet with the 8th grade math scores for the United States in 2011. Then we were to compare our state (WV) with the other US jurisdictions. We aren't doing so well (as you will see in my paper). We had to create a scatter plot of all the jurisdictions. Then we had to do a t-test on males vs females in the US to see if there was a significant difference between the genders. There was not. We had to report this in words and in a table. Below is my paper uploaded in a google doc. Once again the format got messed up so I will post pictures of my scatter plot and table.

Here is my paper

Appropriate a YouTube video

For this assignment, we were to find a video we love, download it to our computer, then repost it on our own YouTube account. To do this, I got on YouTube and found my favorite Simon's Cat video (Santa Claws). Then I opened my Benderconverter Realplayer from earlier in the semester. I downloaded the video. I then converted it to WMV format. Then I went to my YouTube account and uploaded the video from my computer. Here is my video.

Sign up for a YouTube account

Today we were to sign up for a YouTube account so that we can upload videos to our own account to avoid videos we want to use being removed by the owners. When I created my account, I was able to link it with my google account. My username is wgarner113.

APA Writing

For this assignment, we were to take our findings from our Excel word and turn them into a research paper in APA style. We needed a method section, results section, table(s), and references section. We were given several examples which may or may not have been in APA format and we were able to post our papers on the discussion board to get feedback from others.
Example 1 Example 2 Example 3

Then we were to upload our papers to google docs. The problem with this is that not all the format transfered.
Here is my google doc.

And here is how my table and header after the first page is supposed to look:

P Values

Here are all my p values from my t tests.

Hypothesis Testing

This week we were assigned to take our data and hypothesis from last week and use a T Test to find out if our data is statistically significant. This was a little difficult for me at first. I watched the videos that our professor gave us, but I was still a little confused. Then I went to the discussion board and found a post from Cassity that really helped. From there I was able to complete the assigned tests. Below is a video of me completing one of my tests.

One thing that has changed from last week is that I had to change the wording of my hypothesis and null hypothesis.
Question 1
Does teaching status affect number of discussion posts?
Independent Variable
Teaching status
Dependent Variable
Number of discussion posts
Hypothesis
Teaching status does affect discussion posts.
Null Hypothesis
Teaching status does not affect discussion posts.
P value: 0.064723
Question 2
Does gender affect quiz score?
Independent Variable
Gender
Dependent Variable
Quiz score
Hypothesis
Gender does affect quiz score.
Null Hypothesis
Gender does not affect quiz score.
P value: 0.284535
For both of my questions, the p value is higher than .05. This means that the data is not statistically significant. I can say that teaching status does not affect discussion posts and gender does not affect quiz score.

This activity fits ISTE NETS T standard number three. We tested our hypothesis using Excel and this is digital age thinking. Research in teaching is important so that we can increase student learning and improve the profession.

Data Analysis

For this assignment, we were to come up with two research questions with a hypothesis and null hypothesis for each based on the data we were given. This was a fairly simple task once I knew what all the terms meant. We are going to be going over these items in a meeting tomorrow. My questions, variables, etc. are below.

Question 1
Does teaching status affect number of discussion posts?
Independent Variable
Teaching status
Dependent Variable
Number of discussion posts
Hypothesis
Those currently teaching will have a higher average number of discussion posts.
Null Hypothesis
Those currently teaching will have a lower average number of discussion posts.

Question 2
Does gender affect quiz score?
Independent Variable
Gender
Dependent Variable
Quiz score
Hypothesis
Males will have a higher average quiz score.
Null Hypothesis
Males will have a lower average quiz score.
